I found it fun how this painting came together. I was in university at the time taking a lot of art history courses. I was still experimenting with oil paint and what I can do with the canvas, and in this particular case I decided to tape off about 2/3 of the surface, and I did it in the design of about ¼ of Piet Mondrian’s “Broadway Boogie Woogie”. I then painted the colours and the person, the woman in the hat in the background, from top to bottom. Her image came from some pics I took after she volunteered to model for me. She was wearing a leather jacket and bluesman hat for that pic. Once the colouring was done I took off the tape with the intention to fill it in but I ended up leaving it white, untouched, and leaving the bare primed canvas. Voila, my first masterpiece, if only in my own mind.
